Create Your Own Custom 20mm Worktop—No CNC Required

How to Build a 20mm Workbench with the Parf Guide System
For an excellent tutorial, read How to Build a Power Tool Table from Axminster Tools & Machinery.

Designed by renowned woodworker and inventor Peter Parfitt, we're pleased to provide UJK Technology's Parf Guide System Mark II. A highly accurate means of laying out a pattern of 20mm holes in a work surface, this system makes the task both quick and easy. Thanks to the high precision CNC machining used to perfectly position the registration holes along the two Parf sticks and some classic geometry (the Pythagorean theorem, to be specific), the Parf Guide System produces highly accurate hole positions at near CNC accuracy. With an accurate pattern of 20mm holes and a set of our Bench Dogs, you will be able to make the perfect right angle or 45° cuts with your guide rail and track saw.

The design of the Parf Guide System Mark II preserves and guarantees the long-term accuracy of the jig as well as improving its ease of use. It uses two "Parf Sticks" along with a drill guide and a special 3mm drill bit to create rows and columns of holes at perfect right angles.

The accuracy of the Parf Guide System is dependent on the very tight tolerance of the holes in the Parf Sticks. The drill guides locate positively into holes in the Parf Stick. These guides include oilite bushes to guide the 3mm drill bit. This design prevents any possibility of wear or elongation of these vital holes as a result of repeated use. Additional holes in the Parf Sticks offer the possibility of drilling intermediate holes at 32mm or 48mm centers or holes at predetermined angles other than 90°. The Parf Sticks have a metric scale along one edge so that they may have other uses in the workshop.

How It Works

Based on Pythagorean theorem, the Parf Guide System uses the aforementioned Parf Sticks, along with a 3mm drill guide and 3mm drill bit, to create an accurately placed series of holes with the rows at perfect right angles to the columns. Then, the guide block and a special 20mm bit come into play to produce the final pattern of 20mm holes.

The Parf Guide System Mark II includes two Parf Sticks, each 1m long with a series of 3mm holes along the length at 96mm centers; a 3mm drill guide with 3mm drill bit, and three 3mm guide pins. Plus, a guide block and a special 20mm tungsten carbide drill bit with a 3mm center guide.

  • Based on the Pythagorean theorem for infallible accuracy
  • Quick and easy, guaranteed results every time
  • Produce a portable cutting worktop whenever the need arises
  • Create custom-made, bench top track saw cutting stations
  • All components made, checked or assembled in Great Britain
  • Includes two Parf Sticks and all necessary guides and drill bits

Add the Parf Protractor by Choosing the PLUS Kit

The UJK Parf Protractor adds the ability locate and bore precise 20mm holes ranging from 0-45° and 45-90°, with fine angle measurements in 0.5° increments. Perfect for making super-accurate angled cuts on your tracksaw cutting station by using just two bench dogs as Peter Parfitt depicts in this video.

The UJK Parf Protractor is included with the Parf Guide System Mk. II PLUS Kit, selectable at the top of this page. It can also be purchased separately for those who already own a Parf Guide System.

Slightly disappointed in the overall fit and finish

Posted by Sebastian on 11th Oct 2019

Don’t get me wrong, this is a wonderful product that delivers on its promise of perfectly spaced and square hole patterns. What I found disappointing was the finishing of the individual components. My rules and drill guides both had large burrs that needed to be addressed as they interfered with the operation of the system and prevented everything from fitting together smoothly. Once that was remedied, the system worked wonderfully and I’m satisfied with the results. But for the price, I expected a higher level of finish and quality control...

    Parf Guide II

Posted by Ross on 16th Sep 2019

I had the Parf Guide I and it was excellent. The II is heads above the one because of the drill guides for the 3mm drill which does not scar the steel rulers and assures more accurate placement and keeps the 3mm drill in a more accurate vertical plane.

    High Quality Product

I am currently using this to build a custom MFT cart with multiple MFT surfaces. Overall the product does exactly as intended, produce a very accurate array of holes. It takes little time to get the hang of it and there are a few ways to go about it provided you keep to the main 3-4-5 methodology. I have a few recommendations for further ease of use. (1) Visually differentiate the two drill guide bushings. One has a slightly longer neck, the short one for when using one rule and the longer one for using two rules stacked. It is easy to grab the wrong one while working. (2) While the whole system is clearly of high precision, the nature of high precision makes it a challenge to mate parts that have such a high precision. Most notably, it can become an issue getting the drill bushings and 3mm pins to register in the rule holes (also the dogs into the main guide holes). It would help if one or both surfaces had a small chamfer to help ease the mating parts together. (3) The rule hole markings start at 0 and go on up. It would make more sense to me if the numbers started at 1 since that is the actual number of holes you have. Also a minor point and maybe no one else would like it done this way. A few of the holes in the rules, while accurate, have slight imperfections where it appears the machine tool slightly mislocated. This does not affect the accuracy of each hole as the thru holes are indeed round, but the reading surface of the hole is just slightly misshapen and does slightly affect inserting the drill bushing. It is a minor gripe, but one to note on what is otherwise a set of finely crafted tools. All in all though, a finely made set in a world fraught with low quality offerings, this one does not disappoint.
