Description
Thirty-Five Years of Evolution, Built Into One Chuck Body
Axminster built one of the world's first four-jaw self-centering chucks for woodturners more than thirty-five years ago. The Evolution SK114 is what that design looks like today, refined by decades of professional turner feedback. The slim 114 mm (4.5") stainless steel body sits as close to the headstock bearings as your spindle allows, so heavy stock removal happens with less vibration and less load on the bearings.
The factory-fitted SafetyJaw® accessory mounting jaws are longer than typical, increasing the contact area inside the chuck's slide ways and quieting vibration that shorter mounting jaws can't. The chuck ships with a soft-grip key and is fully compatible with the Axminster jaw range; if you're moving up from an SK100 setup, fit the SK100 Accessory Mounting Jaws to keep your existing jaws in service.
Available Options
Choose your lathe thread at the top of the page. Two thread options available in this catalog:
- 1" x 8 tpi (SKU 720951): Most common 100 mm-class lathe thread.
- 1-1/4" x 8 tpi (SKU 720952): Standard for larger production lathes.
Key Features
- Direct-Threaded Body: Direct-threaded body ensures concentricity — no plating, no shim stack, no drift.
- Slim 114 mm Body: 114 mm (4.5") diameter keeps the workpiece tight to the headstock for clean cuts and easy bearings.
- Stainless Steel Construction: Solid stainless. No rust, no plating to wear off, no corrosion from green wood or cold-shop condensation.
- Jaws to 2 Microns: Scroll register and thread cut in one operation; jaws machined to within 2 microns for super-precision repeatability.
- Soft-Grip Chuck Key: Three hardened pinions for any-angle access. Tactile grip, no slippage.
- Factory-Fitted SafetyJaw©: Radiused outer edges on the accessory mounting jaws reduce injury risk if hands stray near the rotating chuck.
- CNC-Machined in Axminster: Designed, machined, and assembled in Axminster's own UK facility.
- Lifetime Chuck Guarantee: Parts and labor covered for life when properly maintained.
- British Made: Designed and manufactured by NuCo Tools in Axminster, Devon, UK.
Woodturning Continues to Evolve
The Axminster Evolution SK114 is a precision four-jaw scroll chuck, machined and assembled entirely in Axminster, UK — the result of decades of professional turner feedback baked into a single tool.
Slim 114 mm (4.5") body, ultra-compact stack height, and SafetyJaw© accessory mounting jaws as standard. Built to keep the workpiece close to the headstock, where the bearings work easiest and the cuts come cleanest.
Buy with confidence
The Axminster Lifetime Guarantee covers parts and labor on every Evolution SK114 chuck — for life, when the chuck is properly maintained.
Made in Axminster, Built in Stainless
The first all-British super-precision woodturning chuck system, machined and assembled in Axminster's own UK facility. Stainless steel — no plating, no rust. The Evolution SK114 isn't plated to size; it's machined to size. Scroll register and thread are cut in a single operation, eliminating concentricity error, and jaws are machined to within 2 microns.

Soft-Grip Chuck Key & SafetyJaw©
Three hardened pinions for any-angle access; the soft-grip chuck key has a tactile finish for zero slippage under torque. Long SafetyJaw© accessory mounting jaws ship factory-fitted — the radiused outer edges reduce injury risk if hands stray near the rotating chuck. The same mounting system accepts the full Axminster jaw range (Type C dovetail, Colossus, Deep Grip, and more, sold separately).

Smoother, Faster, Cleaner
The 50 mm (1.97") deep body sits as close to the headstock bearings as the spindle allows. Less overhang means less vibration on heavy stock removal — smoother cuts, faster cleanup, and longer bearing life.

Axminster Lifetime Chuck Guarantee
Axminster covers parts and labor on every Evolution SK114 chuck for life. One of the most comprehensive workholding guarantees on the market.

A Brief History of Axminster Chucks
Axminster built its first four-jaw self-centering chuck for woodturners more than 35 years ago. Most of what's followed has been driven by feedback from professional turners.
The Evolution range is the result of three-plus decades of design and production experience — refined, repeatable, and engineered to outlast a working career.
Every accessory jaw set the company has ever made is still compatible with a new Evolution chuck off the shelf. Backwards compatibility isn't an afterthought; it's the design principle.
In Detail
More than 35 years on from Axminster's first four-jaw self-centering woodturning chuck, the Evolution SK114 is the current state of that line — refined by feedback from professional turners across decades.
The 114 mm (4.5") stainless body, 50 mm (1.97") deep, sits as close to the headstock bearings as the spindle allows. Less overhang means less vibration on heavy stock removal — smoother cuts, faster cleanup, and longer bearing life.
To keep full compatibility with the SK100 jaw range when using the SK114, fit the SK100 accessory mounting jaws (SKU 106818, sold separately).
