The Discovery SK100 package puts a complete workholding setup on your lathe in one purchase. You get the chuck and enclosure, an interchangeable backplate matched to your spindle thread, Type C dovetail jaws for general bowl and end-grain work, a faceplate ring for mounting blanks fast, a screw chuck for initial bowl work, and the chuck key. Add specialty jaws as your projects demand, but this package is enough to start turning the day it arrives.

The chuck itself is solid stainless steel, machined to a tight tolerance so the jaws and lathe spindle stay in true contact through years of regular use. And because the backplate is interchangeable, the system grows with you — when your lathe changes, you swap the backplate and keep the chuck body and the jaw set you've built up around it.

A Brief History of Axminster Chucks

Axminster built its first woodturner's chuck in 1984. The team chose a four-jaw scroll design from the start — three-jaw chucks aren't suited to woodturning, and the four-jaw approach opened the door to a system of interchangeable accessory jaws.

Forty years on, that accessory mounting standard still fits today's chucks. Jaws bought decades ago still work with a new Discovery chuck off the shelf.

Assembly note: chuck front to backplate — four M6 x 25 mm screws at 12 Nm (8.9 ft-lbs). Chuck to enclosure — four M4 x 40 mm screws at 3.5 Nm (2.6 ft-lbs). Two M5 set screws at 2 Nm (1.5 ft-lbs).
